3550 - UMTS/HSDPA or GPRS speed?

Beitrag von Bassie »

I am new to LANCOM routers, so to the 3550 as well.

The router is used in combination with T-Mobile UMTS/HSDPA in Holland. The UMTS option is correctly set.

I don't understand that, while the lights on the PCMCIA card indicate a UMTS connection, the actual speed doesn't really match with it. Mostly, I only have around:
- download 40KBytes/s
- upload 30KBytes/s

That seems too low for UMTS of HSDPA to me.

Can anybody help?

Hi Bassie,
I think this is an absolutely normal speed for a 3G connection. Please don't mix up kBit with KB/sec. 3G is per spec 384KBit/sec that is a max of 48KByte/sec minus packetheaders - So you should be happy with your speed.

3.5G offers more speed and better timings but as I know, whether orange nor KPN do offer 3.5G at the moment.
Cheers,
Joe

That speed you measured would be alright for 3g without hsdpa but for hsdpa enabled 3g it would indeed be too slow.

I would contact the provider and ask if the base stations in your area are all hsdpa enabled.

Hi Bassie

consider the round trip delay of about 400ms for the UMTS connection. You might have to increase the TCP window size on your computer to get the full speed
