General help required with a Lancom 3550

Beitrag von Embryo »

Hello, I'm italian, living on the small island of Elba.
I'm so sorry I can't speak German...I still managed to register here somehow!!
I live in the remote hills, without telephone line so I'm planning to get hsdpa connection for my house.
After joinig an italian umts forum, I was advised to get a Lancom 3550 for my home network aims:
-be connected with hsdpa on my PC.
- offer my guests to be connected to internet with their wi-fi laptops.
- use VoIP technology with a dedicated wi-fi IP phone.

So, I just got the router Lancom 3550, second hand dated 2003. It should arrive soon.

Ok my questions are:
Can I use this router as a gateway for a wi-fi IP telephone located upstairs in my house so to use VoIP permanently even when the PC is off? (PC and router will be downstairs).
What will the quality of the conversations will be like?
What do I do/need to improve it?
What specific wi-fi IP phone do you suggest I buy?

Is the Lancom 3550 compatible with an Option Globetrotter Express Card II 7.2 using the appropiate express-pcmcia adaptor?

Once I get the router, the express card, and the RJ45 cable for my PC (I'll get the IP phone later on) what are the very first elementary steps to take so just to be connected to the web in hsdpa and manage to download the latest LAN and firmware versions for the router?
Do I need to get any log in special codes or any drivers or any info from the person who sold me the router?
Does the fact that my router is from 2003 will give me any problems?

Ok the last question (for now):

Is this router the best I can get considering my aims and the fact that I have no land telephone line?
thanks for your time,
Mauro

Hello Mauro,

let me assure You that most of the things You want will work with the 3550 UMTS. And from my point of view there is NO better device to suit Your needs (and mine, too).

When You get the router reset it to defaults first. Press the Microswitch at the back of the device until the front LEDs lit all red (approx. 15s).

Afterwards: RTFM.
You will find the device´s manual here: http://www.lancom-systems.de/LANCOM.356 ... =1&pid=170

The complete reference manual of the LANCOM Operating System named LCOS could be found here:
http://www.lancom-systems.de/Documentat ... ab0.0.html

Or check LANConfig for its wizards. They will help You out while configuring the device.

You can use Your Wi-Fi phone permanently as long as the 3550 is switched on ;-)

As of the Lancom Website the 3550 UMTS is compatible with the Express Card II and PC-Card-Adapter. You should look for the latest LCOS Update at http://www.lancom-systems.de/LANCOM.356 ... =1&pid=170.
Do not forget to load the latest LANTools first from http://www.lancom-systems.de/LANtools.2 ... ab0.0.html

Mugh, thanks for replying and for your advice.
I'm still waiting for the 3550 to arrive.
Have been reading the manuals.
The first steps I do when it arrives:

1- Download LCOS, Lanconfig and LANmonitor from the Lancom site.
2- Do the reset
3- Connect the 3550 to my PC.
4- The LAN will pick up the router automatically and a set up wizard pops up.
5- There should be an option where I can install the LCOS by giving the correct
path.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Will I be able to use the WLAN of the 3550 for a Skype wi-fi phone?
